The Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is located in the west of Croatia, and covers the surface area of 3,590 km2. Partly located by the sea, with numerous islands of Kvarner, it is bordered in the north by the rivers of Cabranka and Kupa, and in the west by the ridge of Ucka and Cicarije. Rijeka, the largest Croatian port dominating the whole Bay of Kvarner, is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the county. Due to its favourable geographic position, Rijeka became one of the most significant transit ports in this part of Europe.
