Bourgas is the fourth biggest town in the southeast of Bulgaria and occupies the innermost part of a large bay and forms a natural harbour well-protected from the winds. It is the chief town of the Bourgas Region famed for its beautiful seaside resorts, vast vineyards and superb red and white wines, and a great number of industries and business.
The site was inhabited in remote ancient times judging from the archaelogical Thracian and Greek remains of pottery found. In the 70s AD the Romans built towers there and named the place Debeltum. The Greek colonies in this area existed from the 6th century BC to the 20th century and the place was named Pirgos, the Greek word for “tower”.
The number of the population grew after Bulgaria’s Liberation in 1878 from the Ottoman oppression from about 3,000 to over 300,000 today. In 1890 a railway line was built to connect it with the interior of the country and the modern Port of Bourgas was commissioned in 1903, and some years later Bourgas Airport was opened to make Bourgas and its area a major transport junction. In the years after World War II Bourgas saw a rapid economic development and many factories of both the heavy and light industry were built, such as a ship-building and repair yards, factories for railway carriages, electric cables and conductors, prefabricated concrete panels, textiles, radiators, furniture and furnishing, soap, sugar, and a number of food-processing factories. In the early 1960s the Petro-Chemical Combine Works were opened to become the biggest company in Bourgas (now it is owned by Lukoil under the name Lukoil Neftochim) comprising a huge Oil Refinery and other factories which produce not only fuels and oils but plastics, fibres, synthetic rubber, and polyethylene as well.
Today, with its extended port and airport facilities, together with its developed railway and road network, Bourgas is a major transport centre in Bulgaria, and there are plans to build a pipeline from Bourgas to Alexandrupolis to transport oil to Greece. In recent years Bourgas and the area has been turned into a huge building site and thousands of residential, office, business, and hotel buildings have been opened or are under construction, which makes the town an ideal place for buying properties in Bulgaria offering not only sea apartments in Bulgaria but also rural houses for sale in Bulgaria, land for sale in Bulgaria, land investment in Bulgaria, and Bulgaria mountain property.
